Is Animation Still Relevant in the Age of AI?

Are 3D product reveal animations and 2D explainer videos still relevant in a world powered by AI? While AI tools can generate quick visuals, they often lack strategic storytelling, brand positioning, and conversion-focused messaging. This article explores why professional, story-driven animation remains a powerful tool for B2B brands, tech companies, and product-based businesses looking to build trust, increase perceived value, and drive measurable results. Learn why animation isn’t just about movement — it’s about clarity, connection, and competitive positioning.

I've been hearing this question a lot recently from business owners, and I'll be honest, sometimes I just feel like going into a boxing ring and doing a few rounds of exercise. But especially in South Africa, people tend to be naive on a lot of things, and hopping on the trending train no questions asked. So I guess you could say my patience is a bit stronger, because all I know they need to change their minds is to be educated.

Short answer?
Yes. But the why has changed.

 🧿AI can generate movement.
 🧿AI can generate images.
🧿AI can even generate something that looks like a product reveal.

❌What AI cannot generate is strategy, positioning, your goals and story that converts.

And that’s the difference. Which is insanely big if you haven't figured it out yet.

Are 3D Product Reveal Animations Still Used?

Absolutely.

From SaaS platforms to physical products, companies still use 3D product reveals because:

Think about brands like Samsung. Their product launches aren’t random animations. Every camera movement, lighting choice, and transition reinforces precision, premium quality, and innovation.

That’s not just animation.
That’s brand psychology.

A 3D reveal isn’t about spinning an object in space.
It’s about building desire, confidence, and trust.

What About 2D Explainer Videos?

2D explainers are still one of the most effective tools in B2B marketing.

Because clarity wins.

If you sell:

A story-driven explainer simplifies the message without dumbing it down.

AI can generate a script.
AI can generate a voiceover.
AI can generate moving graphics.

But AI doesn’t understand your market positioning, your sales process, or the objections your ideal client has before signing.

That requires intention.

Coca-Cola used Ai to generate animations for their Chrismas editions in 2024 and it really turned out unsettling, confusing and inconsistent. They have millions, so damaging their brand isn't such a big deal... but can you afford to risk your brands credibility? Read more about Coca-Colas Ai attempt here.

“But AI Is Cheaper…”

Yes. So are generic templates.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Cheap animation doesn’t just look cheap. It positions you as cheap. And in B2B, perception is everything.

When you use AI-generated visuals with no strategy:

If everyone can generate the same style in 60 seconds, how do you stand out?

You don’t.

Story Still Sells (Even in B2B)

We focus on story-driven animation and B2B Animation for a reason. Even when targeting businesses, decisions are still made by people. In my BNI (Business Networking International) group, we often say:

You don’t get referrals by aggressively selling your services.
You get referrals by educating people, building relationships and passionately explaining what you do.

The same principle applies to animation.

✅A good 3D product reveal doesn’t just show features. It tells the story of innovation.

✅A good 2D explainer doesn’t just list benefits. It walks the viewer through a relatable problem and shows transformation.

That’s what people buy into.

❌Not motion.
❌Not effects.
❌Not trendy AI visuals.

Clarity. Confidence. Connection.

The Real Question Isn’t “AI or Animation?”

The real question is:

Do you want content that fills space? Or content that moves buyers closer to a decision?

AI is a tool.
Professional animation is a strategic asset.

When animation is crafted around:

It becomes more than a video. It becomes a sales tool. If you’re considering a 3D product reveal or a 2D explainer, don’t just ask:

“How much does it cost?”

Ask:

“What story are we telling — and is it strong enough to convert?”

Why Animation Works for Business Marketing and Storytelling

Animation for business marketing has become more common over the last few years. From animated adverts to product videos and social media content, businesses are using animation to explain ideas, tell stories, and connect with audiences in a simple and memorable way. This article breaks down why animation works, how to use it properly, and what to consider before investing in animated content.

1. Why animation works so well for marketing

Animation is good at one thing most ads struggle with: keeping attention.

Unlike filmed content, animation isn’t limited by reality. You can show ideas, emotions, and stories that would be expensive—or impossible—to film.

More importantly, animation lets you tell a story without needing a big setup:

People also tend to remember animated content more easily, especially when characters or a short story are involved.

According to research by Wyzowl, people retain up to 95% of a message when they watch it in a video, compared to just 10% when reading text.

That’s a big difference.

Animation also helps when your product or service is hard to explain. Instead of long explanations, animation can show the idea visually in seconds.

2. Animation works best when there is a clear plan

One mistake many businesses make is jumping straight into animation without knowing why they need it.

Before making an animated advert, trailer, or video, it helps to ask:

Animation looks great, but without a basic marketing plan, it can easily become “nice to look at” content that doesn’t do much.

A simple strategy helps you:

Even a short animated video can be powerful if the goal is clear.

3. Real examples of animation used successfully

Some of the best examples of animation in marketing come from brands that lean into storytelling, not hard selling.

A well-known example is how large food brands in Japan use short anime-style commercials. Instead of focusing on the product only, they show:

The product becomes part of the story, not the main character shouting for attention.

This is why those ads are shared online, remembered, and talked about—long after the campaign ends.

This McDonalds ad below, went viral in 2025, bringing in millions of views and shares across the globe, and surprisingly got a lot of Americans attention. Keep in mind, this was targeted to the Japanese audiences, but got the attention of everyone.

Why was this so successful?

Because it connected beyond the product itself. A simple 20s animation with a very cozy ambiance, showed a family enjoying a McD meal together. Exactly one of the reasons why it went viral among Americans. Often fast food restaurants in the US only focuses on on hardcore selling and often families don't sit-and-eat together as they used to, which is why it connected unintentionally for Westerners.

Animation works well for:

You don’t need a massive budget to do this. You need a clear idea and a good story.

4. Is animation cheaper than filmed commercials?

In many cases, yes.

A full filmed commercial often includes:

Animation removes many of these costs.

However, animation isn’t automatically cheap.

The cost depends on:

A short, well-planned animated video can be very affordable.
A long, highly detailed animation can become expensive quickly.

The key is knowing what level of quality you actually need to reach your goal.

We’re Building South Africa’s First Anime Movie — And We Need Your Support

South African anime is entering a new era. At Wonderr Studio, we are raising funds to produce the first South African anime movie, marking a major step forward for anime production in Mzansi. As anime continues to grow into a multi-billion-dollar global industry, South Africa remains an untapped creative force. This project aims to change that—by creating an original anime film rooted in South African storytelling, culture, and emotion.

Anime has exploded over recent years. What was once a niche medium has grown into a global cultural force—one that millions of people love, connect with, and find meaning in.

A Bold Mission: South Africa’s First Dedicated Anime Studio

Our mission is simple—but bold.

At Wonderr Studio, we aim to build South Africa’s first official anime studio, producing anime series and films created by South African storytellers, rooted in our culture, emotions, and lived experiences.

This isn’t about copying Japan.
It’s about telling Mzansi stories through the anime medium, with a distinct South African flair that the world has never seen before.

Why Anime?

Because anime is one of the fastest-growing entertainment industries in the world.

Yet despite South Africa’s rich creative talent, we don’t have a studio dedicated to anime at scale—one that develops long-form, story-driven 2D animation for global audiences.

BUT... we just REALLY REALLY love anime!! And we want to be part of creating worlds people connect with on such a deep level, just like how we connect with these amazing shows.

Our vision includes:

This is about building an industry—not just content.

This Is a National Creative Movement

This project is bigger than Wonderr Studio.

By creating anime locally, we’re investing directly into South Africa’s creative economy. We’re opening doors for 2D animation to flourish here—just as it already does in Japan, the US, and Europe.

We want to prove that South African stories, told through anime, can move audiences worldwide, while creating real jobs and real opportunities at home.

In short, we’re not just building shows.
We’re building a future for South African animation.

🎤 Wonderr Studio – Growing South Africa’s Anime & 2D Animation Future

At Wonderr Studio, our mission is simple but bold: we want to build South Africa’s first dedicated anime studio.

Why anime? Because it’s one of the fastest-growing entertainment industries in the world—streaming platforms are investing billions into it, and audiences everywhere can’t get enough of powerful stories told through 2D animation. But here in South Africa, we don’t yet have a studio dedicated to creating anime on that scale, rooted in our culture, our voices, and our stories. That’s where Wonderr steps in.

Our vision is to grow into a studio that not only produces original anime series and films, but also becomes a hub for local 2D animation talent. Step one is building strong, story-driven projects that can compete globally. Step two is growing the studio to hire more South African artists—illustrators, animators, writers, voice actors—and give them opportunities to work on international-quality productions without having to leave the country.

This is bigger than just one studio. By creating anime here, we’re investing in the local creative economy. We’re opening doors for 2D animation to flourish in South Africa, the same way it already thrives in Japan, the US, and beyond. And as Wonderr grows, we want to be the proof that South African stories, told through anime, can inspire audiences across the world—while creating real jobs and real opportunities right here at home.

In short, Wonderr Studio is about building more than shows. We’re building a creative future where South African artists can dream, create, and work in a thriving 2D animation space.”

Why Animated Logos Are Companies Secret Weapon

Why Animated Logos Are Branding’s Secret Weapon

We are back with another insightful blog, this time we are discussing a hot topic, animated logos and the impact it can provide for your business/ or your clients business. I love anything creative that can capture that pure emotional energy from my clients into the way they market themselves. Animated logos are such a fun, creative and impact-full way of bringing that emotion forward.

Do you have your seat belts secured? Great! Let's dive right into it.

Animated logos aren’t just “fun to look at”—they’re smart business. Here's why they pack a punch:

In short: animated logos are clever tools—not just cute visuals.

Case Study: Huegah Coffee’s Animated Logo

Here’s a real-world success story: I created a 2D animated logo for Huegah Coffee, a vibrant local coffee shop. I shared it on Wonderr Studios' Instagram—and the results were clear:

This shows how animated logos can spark engagement, elevate brand awareness, and drive genuine interest—far beyond what dry, fact-only marketing can achieve.

Emotional, Creative Marketing Wins in 2025

Today’s audiences aren’t moved by facts alone. They crave emotional connection, bold creativity, and authenticity. Especially in the era of generative AI, audiences increasingly seek real, human-driven content.

In short: AI can assist—but the more human the touch, the stronger the connection.

What Research Says About Animated Logos

Animated logo designs are more than eye candy; they’re backed by science:

How to Get Started (From Any Industry)

  1. Start simple – a subtle shimmer, a smooth text reveal, or a gentle slide can be enough.
  2. Use your existing logo – no rebrand necessary. A skilled animator can breathe new life into what you’ve already built.
  3. Keep it short – under 7 seconds. It should feel like a signature, not a trailer.
  4. Match the motion to the mood:
    • Bold & energetic? Think zooms or bursts.
    • Calm & professional? Opt for fades or smooth reveals.
    • Playful? Let your icon bounce, wink, or scribble.
  5. Deploy everywhere – from YouTube intros and email signatures to presentations and ads.
  6. Keep your static logo too – use print. Use animated for digital. (Trust me—no design police will fine you.)

Animated logos are more than a digital trend—they’re a powerful way to connect, humanize, and elevate your brand in today’s dynamic landscape. As consumers increasingly value authenticity, creativity, and emotional storytelling over pure information, animated branding gives you a distinct edge.

Curious how you can get started? Drop me a note —let’s talk— no strings attached.

Google has launched their Gemini Ai. What does that mean for the future of your business?

gemini ai Google SEO death of seo Marketing alternatives

SEO might die, if it isn’t dead already. And it means that it could be harder for your website to be found on Google, leading search engine on a global scale.

Before we get into it, let’s look at what SEO is if you don’t.

What is SEO?

SEO—short for search engine optimization—is about helping search engines understand your content, and helping users find your site and make a decision about whether they should visit your site through a search engine.

Why might it be ‘dead’ and why should you care?

SEO may become less effective due to Google’s new AI, Gemini, which provides users with summarized answers directly in search results—similar to ChatGPT. This means fewer users will visit individual websites, especially without paid ads. As a result, small businesses with limited marketing budgets may struggle more to attract direct traffic. Additionally, Gemini’s summaries can sometimes include misinformation, reducing the value of trustworthy website content and making it harder for businesses to convert visitors into clients.

All hope is not lost. What can you do to still get a good amount of visitors to your website?

Optimizing Your Website for Gemini AI & SEO

✅ 1. Structure Content for AI Readability

✅ 2. Add Schema Markup

Use:

This improves your chance of being featured in Gemini summaries and rich results.

✅ 3. Keep Content Original & Authoritative

✅ 4. Tease, Don’t Reveal It All

✅ 5. Build Featured Snippet Blocks

✅ 6. Use Internal Links

Guide AI and users to other relevant pages.

📌 Strategy 2: Animated Story Posts on Social Media
Short 15–30 second videos that:

Use: Reels, TikTok, LinkedIn short posts, YouTube Shorts
Tools: Canva, After Effects, LottieFiles

📌 Strategy 3: Visual Roadmaps & Directory Graphics
Design illustrations that visually explain how to use your site, such as:

These work great on:

📌 Strategy 4: Gamified Website Exploration
Incorporate interactive animated elements (like scroll-based animations or clickable mascot helpers).

Example:

“Ask Deimos the creative Tharnyx” — Click the mascot to get blog suggestions.

📌 Strategy 5: Consistent Character-Driven Content

9. Delivers Timeless & Reusable Content

When developing high-performance product animations—like the SiliCore X1 Chip—we follow a structured, collaborative process to create visually engaging and technically accurate results. Below is an overview of the 3D animation production pipeline, tailored for advanced tech products and digital marketing.

1. Initial Consultation & Creative Brief

We begin with a comprehensive meeting to define your animation goals, project scope, and desired outcomes. Whether you need content for product promotion, investor presentations, or customer education, we clarify the purpose from the start.
Together, we explore key visual preferences, references, animation styles, and review elements such as mood boards, animation duration, and brand alignment. This phase sets a clear direction, ensuring that both creative vision and technical execution are aligned.

2. Budget Discussion & Project Approval

With the creative brief in place, we assess the project’s feasibility and develop a tailored cost estimate with the animation team. After we review and adjust the budget as needed, we gather your feedback and finalize the agreement.
Once approved, we initiate production by processing initial payments and officially kicking off the project.

3. Storyboarding & Visual Planning

A storyboard outlines the narrative and flow of the animation through a series of rough sketches.
These visuals define the sequence, key movements, transitions, and product interactions. Animators use storyboarding to plan timing, angles, and camera motion—crucial elements for tech product visualizations and motion graphics.

4. 3D Modeling of Product & Assets

Movements are then animated based on the storyboard, with a focus on fluid transitions and cinematic camera paths.
Special effects like particle systems, data streams, and raytracing visuals are introduced here to emphasize innovation and performance.

7. Lighting & Scene Composition

We customize lighting to match the desired mood—whether a sleek tech lab or a consumable.
Our approach combines natural and stylized cinematic lighting setups to highlight product details and amplify realism. We also fine-tune camera angles and scene compositions to direct the viewer’s focus throughout the animation.

8. Rendering & Post-Production

We render the animation in high resolution using GPU-accelerated engines to maximize clarity and efficiency.
Our workflow includes both real-time and offline rendering—like in this SiliCore X1 chip reveal, which uses offline rendering for enhanced detail. After rendering, we move into post-production to polish the visuals.
We apply color grading, motion blur, depth of field, and sound design to finalize the video for delivery.

9. Delivery & Optimization

We export the final animation, ready for use in marketing campaigns, websites, trade shows, or investor pitches.
To boost digital visibility, we also create short clips and teaser reels optimized for social media platforms.

STEYN IP: Copyright & IP Attorney Mascot Design Project

STEYN IP: Copyright & IP Attorney Mascot Design Project

Project Overview

Steyn IP, a law firm specializing in Intellectual Property (IP) and Copyright law, sought to enhance its brand identity through character design. As their firm focuses on protecting intellectual property for creatives —such as artists, animators, and musicians and businesses alike—they wanted a more engaging and personalized way to connect with their target audience.

Objective

The initial goal was to develop two unique characters that would help make the firm's branding more approachable and relatable to creative professionals:

  1. A Lawyer Mascot – Representing the firm’s expertise in IP law.
  2. A Robot Mascot – Designed to serve as a sidekick figure, bringing a playful and dynamic element to the brand.

Design Process

Outcome

However at a later stage, most of my clients connections liked the robot, later named AINNO. And so she became the primary mascot and the humanoid lawyer character became the "side kick" that would only appear at certain times.

My client got inspired during this entire process, and later on developed an AI chat bot that became the mascot, AINNO. You can ask AINNO about anything regarding IP & Copyright and she'll provide some information. Have a crack and ask her HERE.

What was provided during the project?

Steyn Ip received the following content to help them build that personal presence by utilizing their mascot.

  1. Mascot Illustration
  2. Character Sheets of the front, back, side view (Can later be used to create an animation)
  3. Animatic (Short 9s animation)
  4. Christmas Illustration for December festivities
  5. Mascot Profile - VIEW PROFILE - available on Steyn Ip's Website

The final character designs successfully aligned with Steyn IP’s branding objectives, creating a more engaging and memorable presence for their firm.

Branding tips - Making your business unforgettable.

We all know Queen right? The infamous British band established in 1970. And the lead singer being Freddie Mercury, you remember him, I’m sure you do. They left a mark in the history of music.

Each and every single one of us remembers them in one way or the other. Either for their iconic look, their sound or Freddie’s incredible voice.

They have left a memorable mark. That is what a visual brand is. It’s the consistent look and feel of your company across everything you do. And if you have a  consistent look that engages with your customer base on a visual, audio and personal level, you’d have an unforgettable brand people will remember for years.

Why Businesses Shouldn't Use AI for Their Brand

Why Businesses Shouldn't Use AI Characters, Art, Animation or Graphic Design for Their Brand?

As the capabilities of AI art and animation tools grow, businesses may be tempted to incorporate these technologies into their branding strategies. However, relying on AI-generated designs can backfire and harm your brand in the long run.

We have already seen that the backlash from the community has become quite relevant. Businesses that have used AI to promote their brand in one way or the other, has to now defend themselves from the community backlash. From the small business owners that is getting backlash that can potentially get them closed down, to big corporations that is losing customers of the hundreds. - Read on Lifewire what they have to say about the AI backlash.

Here’s why it is not a good idea to associate your brand with AI:

Image 1: The Willy Wonka disaster. In 2024 Ai generated art was created to sell the idea that there would be an unforgettable Willy Wonka experience, only to realize by visitors it was a complete scam. Willy Wonka, more like sad warehouse with limited candies and a drunk Oompa Loompa.

Perception of Being Uncaring or Cheap

Brands are built on trust, authenticity, and connection. Using AI-generated characters, art or visual ads can give the impression that your business prioritizes cost-saving over quality. It signals to your audience that you may not care enough to invest in custom designs or meaningful creative processes.

We are currently seeing the ramifications of businesses that are creating product images with AI, and it is resulting in their products not selling. People do not want to buy things that doesn't seem authentic.

[sbtt-tiktok feed=1]

Lack of Personal Connection

Authenticity resonates with audiences. When designs are crafted by human artists or designers, they come with a story, intention, and a unique touch that builds emotional connections. AI lacks this personal element, making it difficult for your audience to feel engaged or connected to your brand.

Inconsistency in Design for Future Use

One of the key challenges with AI is its inability to replicate designs consistently over time. If your brand relies on a specific character or visual identity, generating future content that aligns seamlessly with your original design can be challenging, leading to a disjointed brand image.
