Film: The Last Painting

story synopsis

In the heart of Cape Town, The Last Painting tells the story of Roy and Emily—two young souls deeply in love, living a quiet normal life. Roy is a contemporary artist, while Emily is an attorney, two opposite worlds that somehow works. For few years, their life together feels almost untouched by the weight of the world—until everything changes.

Glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, enters their story without warning, breaking the rhythm of their love and forcing them into a reality neither of them is ready for.

What follows is not just loss, but the silence it leaves behind. The empty spaces in a home that once felt alive. The unfinished conversations. The memories that refuse to fade.

But The Last Painting is not about death. It is about what remains. It is about the person left behind—how they breathe, how they break, how they struggle to do daily things without breaking down in tears, and how they slowly learn to continue living in a world that no longer feels the same.

What Is African Anime?

African anime refers to Japanese-inspired animated films and series created by African artists, studios, and storytellers. Unlike traditional anime produced in Japan, African anime blends local cultures, mythology, history, and modern experiences with anime-inspired visual storytelling.

At Wonderr Studio, we are creating one of South Africa's first original anime film projects, combining African storytelling with world-class animation to build original African intellectual property for a local and global audience.

Our goal isn't to create race first, culture first African animations, because a good story doesn't start there, it starts at a story that fans connect with. Our focus is original stories written by locals for that South African hint to it, something that is relatable for the local and international fans.

Why African Stories Matter in Anime

The global demand for original African stories has never been higher. Audiences are actively searching for new worlds, fresh perspectives, and diverse characters beyond traditional fantasy settings.

Our long-term vision is to create African-inspired anime, African fantasy, and original stories written and created by South Africans while remaining accessible to anime fans worldwide.
